I just did this with my wife's ipad. I have a couple of suggestions. You can make a separate user id (apple id) for each one OR (the option I used first) I used one apple ID for both and in the settings I turn off the automatic downloads for apps under the itunes apps and store. Now, the problem i found with this is that we both received iMessages. If you want to share music, and little else, create a new apple ID and use that for iMessages and anything else (including mail). You can then share your music purchased with the original apple ID and also have the individual settings that you prefer. You will need to go through the programs under the settings area and make sure that only the programs intentionally shared have the same apple ID.

In order to create a new apple ID without assigning another credit card or whatever, I used my laptop (oh the horror) and went to google and researched a couple of people's plans. The one I found easiest was to (without signing in to itunes) download an app that was FREE and then it asked for an apple ID or to create one. I filled out all the information correctly and then (since the app was free) it bypassed all the usual prerequisite credit card information and then I had it.

If you aren't sharing a music library, or anything else, I'd get an apple ID the way I just described, and keep the ipads completely separate. It would be much easier. Since you seem to need to share an apple ID, simply turn off the automatic downloads feature. An inconvenience will be the inability to messenger each other.

Rambled a bit, but I really did just go through all of this and had to stumble and piece a bunch of different bits of advice together.

Hope this helps. I'll clear up anything you need to if you ask.
