ITunes backup issue

Hi.

I have now done a back up of my Itunes to an external hard drive but when I go to save additional albums to the back up it wants to create another file not add to existing. Help as at this rate I would fill up my external hard drive quite quickly. All I want to do is add to the existing back up but for some reason it wont allow me to. thanks
