Q: Mac Pro 5,1 Fail to Reinstall

Hi All i am running 10.8.2 and was hoping to have a partion on another internal drive to run Snow Leopard (i have some Xcode work with OpenCL that i need nowto go back and work through but OpenCL has changed in 10.8.2 so i really need a Snow Leopard setup...anyhow that's not important, really just background).

However when i try to reinstall OSX from my original Mac pro install disk (the grey disks) it continually fails.  It get's to a grey screen with a grey apple logo and a spinning icon, the HD and DVD are spinning and transferring data for a few minutes and then it just hangs. I thought it may be because i am running a flashed 6870 display card but i swapped that out for the old original Apple card from my partners 3,1 and i that didn't make a difference.  I removed all plugged in hardware, i also tried removing all the HD's i have in the Mac Pro and just dropping a single blank fresh HD in there.  Still not working.  I checked the install disk and it doesn't look to be scratched up or anything.  I also have an original leopard and Snow leopard disk but of course these retail whereas the grey install disk i am using came with this machine.

I am a bit stuck.  Oh and i also run bootcamp on my 10.8.2 and continually get issues with my system getting stuck always loading Windows instead of OSX...so i removed that drive.

Not sure what to do next..maybe ask the local Mac store to "loan" me a matching grey install disk?

Any ideas?

thanks

It would seem that the problem is not the installdisks, but rather, the machine.   As long as you are not attempting to install an OS earlier than the machine was shipped with.   I say take it to an apple store and have them run the in-depth diagnostic software on it.   This will pin point any hardware problem.

When you remove all the pre-existing Hard drives, the only other software-version-specific stuff is in the PRAM. Reset the PRAM before you attempt the Install and you should have a bare MacPro, just like the factory.

But I do not think the Mac Pro 5,1 came with any 10.5 version. I think it came with custom 10.6.4:
