I purchased a 3rd Generation iPad 3 months before the 4th Generation iPad was launched so I am now hesitant to purchase any Apple products again for fear of them being dated within 3 months of purchase. I am tempted in buying the Apple TV but I am wondering is it worth buying now? Or is a new one planned for release soon?

No one knows what Apple has planned for future release, but if you put off buying for fear of the next product being better, you are likely to never buy anything. Are you wanting to buy something because it's the latest or because of what it does, if it's the later then you need to look at whether the Apple TV does what you want it to.
Thanks for your quick (although patronising) response. I am not scared that a product I buy will be replaced by something better. I just want to know if there is plans for a newer version of Apple TV in the near future, I don't want to pay out a large amount of cash for the latest product only to have it replaced by a product within 3 months that is better for the same price.
I'm not buying Apple TV for it to be the latest, I'm not the sort of person that needs the latest of everything, I am however the sort of person who this kind of product is expensive for so when I pay the large cost of the latest product I expect it to be the latest for a longer time than the 3 months that my iPad was the latest for.
I am however buying it because it will be a good way of streaming my iTunes purchases on my living room TV and was wondering if there was any extra uses people could recommend.
The current generation Apple TV will adequately perform all of the tasks you say you want to use it for. You also say that having the latest generation does not matter to you, so I am not sure I understand your original question. May I ask you to elaborate?
Apple TV will also mirror your iPad and supported macs with 10.8. There a lot games that let you play on Apple TV and provide additional info on the iPad. You can access your photo stream and iTunes Match. Apple TV also works with subscription services like Netflix.
I just installed a new Apple TV. A disappointment for me. Not because of a planned oblessence worry, but because of limited content. Unless you are in to the Sports channels, i.e., NBA, NHL, MLB, there's not much of a a draw left besides Netflix and Hulu. HUlu has some really old TV programs most I've never heard of.
Netflix has a limited TV and Movie library, mostly old stuff as well. Doesn't even contain any of the Harry Potter movies, some of which date back to 2001. Before you buy one you can down load the Netflix app to your iPad and watch everything there as well. A one month free trial is offered. If you see a lot of Netflix content of interest then an Apple TV might be a good choice.
The original poster referenced iTunes content which he wishes to stream, and the Apple TV will work fine for this purpose.

Sorry, if you felt it was. I was only trying to say that no-one knows when or if there is a next Apple TV and that if you hold out for one you may never get one or just do without one for a long time. Clearly you could buy one today and find a new one released next week, but no-one here could predict that.
You must not be familiar with the itunes store...
