Blue Screen of Death When opening iTunes.

I am at a loss. For the past six months I have been trying to figure out why my computer has a blue screen of death and then restarts "nearly" everytime i open iTunes. The "nearly" is what's driving me nuts because every once in a while it will open ONCE and then start crashing again. I don't even do anything to help it open it just miraculously works every now and then. It even craches the comp when starting iTunes in safe mode. The blue screen error says "Page Fault in non-paged area". iTunes worked fine for months before this randomly started happening. I have tried every solution I have seen, even ones that weren't for my problem. So far I have:

Manually uninstalled iTunes and QT and reinstalled the standalone QT then iTunes.

Disabled itunes helper and ipod service before starting.

Disabling all other services and start-up items.

Installed current bios and drivers (as far as I can tell)

Installed current windows installer.

Updated microsoft products including .net

Updated Java runtime environment

Replaced ram

I have a pentium 4 1.6ghz with soyo mobo and a RAID card(mirrior) set-up. 1 gig of pc133 ram. I can ul the minidump if needed.

I figured out how to load my podcasts on my ipod manually but I want to get a video ipod so I need itunes. PLEASE HELP!!

hi Rowman!

The blue screen error says "Page Fault in non-paged area".

let's quickly check up on something. by any chance, do you have an early version of Easy CD Creator version 5 on that PC?

Easy CD Creator 5.0 Does Not Function In Windows XP

some versions aren't compatible with XP. but often the first time people realise this is when the PC starts throwing a 0x50 at them when they try to launch itunes, import a CD, or (of all things), plug in an ipod.

(a few more things to check on with this variety of BSOD if the Easy CD Creator thing doesn't turn out to be relevant.)

I have norton systemworks 2006 as well as adware, and spybot search and destroy. I run them regularly and feel my system is not infected. One of the weird issues is that when the system restarts after crashing, many of the symatec files are fixed in the system scan. I unstalled all of the Norton goodies and iTunes still caused BSOD.

I am intrigued by the idea that Easy CD Creator might be the cause. I did have Easy CD Creator installed when I upgraded to XP, but it's not on the list in the Add/Remove Programs. I can't remember if I unistalled it or if it's just not there but I do remember needing a new cd burning program after xp upgrade. What is the solution if Easy CD Creator is the problem?

hiya!

I did have Easy CD Creator installed when I upgraded to XP, but it's not on the list in the Add/Remove Programs.

hmmm. i've seen cases of this where it seemed that leftover registry entries from the Roxio might be causing the problem. (some of the first Easy CD Creator versions of this that i was ever involved in.)

maybe Elaine's experience might provide some useful pointers (it was for an itunes 4.9, but the basic principles are similar):

No love after removing Roxio goodies with Roxizap. Same BSOD "Page fault in non paged area" and restart. This is the error in the event log:

WinMgmt could not open the repository file. This could be due to insufficient security access to the "<%SystemRoot%>\System32\WBEM\Repository", insufficient disk space or insufficient memory.

I am logged in as admin and there is plenty of disk space. Any other ideas?

there's a few more things worth checking on. but let's also capture a minidump of the crash and send it to someone who can interpret minidumps.

To set up your machine to capture a minidump, right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", select the "Advanced" tab, select the "Startup and Recovery" Settings button, select "small memory dump" from the popup. When it crashes, look for the MiniDump file. It's usually in the folder "C:\WINDOWS\Minidump" and is called something like Mini<number>-<number>.dmp.

send it to this email address

in the email, put the URL to this discussion thread, so that whoever gets it has some context. Also give as much information about the context of the crash (in the email) as you can.

Rowman:

I took a look at the crash dump file. The crash appears to be caused by a component called kmdpl.sys. I have not been able to find much information online about this file, but what I have found suggests that kmdpl is related to winlogon.exe: <http://forums.thetechguys.com//showpost.php?p=83856&postcount=3>. Winlogon.exe (not to be confused with winlogin.exe) is a known virus. Just Google "winlogon.exe" for more info.

hi Tomas!

what numerical and text codes are you getting with your blue screen? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPS ANDUNDERSCORES)

here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:

Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages

if you're not seeing a blue screen (or just a flash of one), we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:

1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).

2) Select the "Advanced" tab.

3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button

4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.

After I sent the minidump, ethan tracked which dll was causing the crash. After extensive research I was unable to find what it was related to (ethan thought it was related to spyware) but I scaned with several different programs and ran several removal tools and found nothing. I finally decided to just change the filename of the dll from *.dll to *.bak and iTunes works perfectly. I have been using my computer for the past 3 months without any errors so I guess the dll was probably from an old driver or program I nolonger have. Thanks for your help. I forget the name of the dll and have since deletes the bak file.
