Read whichever is applicable to your system:

OS X Lion: If your Mac runs slowly

OS X Mountain Lion: If your Mac runs slowly

The above articles are very cursory and almost identical, but be sure to carefully read and follow Repair a disk at the end.

Rather than ask a dozen more questions regarding your system, would you be willing to try the following?

Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Go to his website, download and run EtreCheck:

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Don't be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or "failed".

Copy and paste its output in a reply.

Etrecheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.

When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

Thanks.

... and the execrable MacKeeper. Get rid of it.

First, if you have encrypted any files using MacKeeper, unencrypt them using MacKeeper.

Then, read and follow the instructions here: http://mackeeper.zeobit.com/uninstall_mackeeper

You do not need to answer the "reason for uninstalling" question that appears.

Never install it or anything like it again.

As John suggests, rid yourself of MacKeeper.

You don't need an anti-virus program, but if you prefer to have one the only one that is consistently recommended on here as being trouble free on a Mac is the free/donationware clamXav (www/clamxav.com ).
