anyway to disable automatic checking for new email?

Whenever opening the Mail app - it automatically connects and starts downloading new email.

Sometimes, for example if I'm somewhere without WI-FI, I just want to read emails already downloaded and don't want it to try to download new emails.

Is there anyway to disable that? I've already set it to manual - but that doesn't stop it from checking for new email each time the app is opened.
