I get an error message that my start up disk is full what do I need to do?

I'm getting an error message that my start up disk is full and I need to delete some files how do I do this, and is this my hard drive ?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Your startup disk is exactly the same thing as your hard drive. Drag files to the Trash to delete them.
