I have a 2009 iMac that I got from my boyfriend. It worked great until I download Mountain Lion. Since then it keeps freezing on start up and now when it's been sleeping for an hour at lunch time today. I have called Apple Support several times and we try different things but it never works. It's getting frustrating. Any help or suggestions are appareciated!

iMac, iOS 6.0.2

Hello,

Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?

How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

Jan 4, 2013 3:50 PM in response to BDAqua

I did everything you suggest above.

Everything looks good as far as CPU%, there's 2.39 GB of 4GB of free space. There were no pageouts.

However when checking the console for repeated messages there were a few;

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive

Reboot, test again.

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

i tried all this. When i was in safe boot It froze, well the mouse was working but everything I tried to click on just didn't want to work. So its apparently not just happening during normal boot. I looked in the logins and there is nothing listed there and still have problems with it freezing up on first start up of the day and then again when it sleeps after lunch. However, as the day goes on it doesn't freeze up when I start it up again on days that I shut down at lunch break. I wasn't able to find anything else.....?.....

Up until today there were less freeze ups maybe 1 or 2 but now I'm having 5 just this morning 😟

and shutdown is taking a lot longer. Here are some things that were repeated.
