I have a mac-book reasonably new replacement battery won't charge

I have a mac-book (removable battery) with a reasonably new replacement battery. The computer was not used for a long time and when I restarted it I the battery indicator shows an X inside. Neither manner of resetting the SMC have helped.

Any other ideas?

Thanks

Marc
