HELP - we are frozen can't get the password screen to come up

Hi,

It appears my daughters ipod touch has been ipod to ios 6 - and now when turning it on it is frozen on a screen it is grey and says ios 6. I plugged it in to the computer with the cable and says it can't connect because of the passcode - but I can't get to the log in screen.

HELP! I have reset by holding it down - I get the apple but it goes back to ios 6 screen. I can get it to power off and it does the same.
