daughter got brothers old ipod and we have NO idea of password....he is gone and cannot help

my daughter found her brother's old ipod and cannot figure out the password...he is gone forever and cannot help! Have watched youtube vids on "restoring" but when I plug ipod into computer it doesn't go to "normal" apple screen like when I connect my phone....it just goes to "store"! Maybe this isn't possible....I really am an apple idiot!!!
