I recently backed up my iPod Touch 4G, but when i restored the backup, my photos were not restored to anywhere i can find. How can I recover them?

If you restoerd from backup and they did not come back, then they are gone.
You should be importing your pics to your computer regularly, especially before any update or restore.

However, I backed up everything from my ipod. how come the backup did not contain the photos?
Onl;y phtos in the iPod Camer Roll album are in the backup. Synced photos are not.in the backup.

this would probably work, but i'm on windows. And the pictures would have been in the camera roll, which is why i'm wondering why they didn't come back.
Use iPhone Data Recovery.
Choose the recovery mode of to recover from iTunes backup file.
Then, all your iPhone data will be scanned out and you can choose those you want and recover them and save them on your computer.
