How to display 2560x1080 on external monitor from MBP or MBA?

Is there any way to make MBP 17 (Intel HD and nVidia GT graphics, SnowLeo) or MBA 13 (Mountain Lion) display 2560x1080 on external monitor (LG 29" ultrawide)? My MacPro with RadeonX1900 card (10.5.8) does it perfectly but I cannot find a way to get the laptops to do it. Tried res. switching apps, still no good. Thanks.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Dear Keap

Thanks Keap. Excellent i had tried miniport display to DVI cable, minoport dispaly to HDMI cable and on reading apple community support tried miniport display to display and the resolution at 2560x1080 worked and resolution is fine. I carried this out on my 11" MacBook Air to external monitor LG25UM65 and compatibility was good.

The cable was from startech.com

Thanks

On the LG Ultrawide 29EA93 model the MacMini displays beautifully yin 2560x1080 with the mini-displayport to displayport cable.

But when I switch the monitor into PBP mode (2 inputs each with half of the screen - done in hardware on the monitor) I can't get the Mac to throw the screen in 1280x1080 ... which leaves everything rather squished. Any ideas how I can get a working resolution for that?

Great suggestion. I've just connect my AOC Q2963pm 2560x1080 29" monitor (http://us.aoc.com/monitor_displays/q2963pm) to my MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) through a regular HDMI cable.

I do get an image, but the font is not 100% clear, which I think in the long run will ruin my eyes. I've also installed the SwitchResX software and configured User uploaded file

What else can I do to make this work sharper? Would changing cable work? To which cable?

Thnx for the advice!

I bought a Display port to Mini Display cable, but when connecting, I don't get any image on AOC screen... Reverted back to HDMI and that works, but with the blur.
Do I need to have SwitchResX running when using the DP cable? What setting on the AOC should I use: It's the "DP" one right, not the D-SUB. Just checking.

Any other ideas?

Thnx

A further note to my post above, one month later.

MBA got stolen on a train. Bought a MBP 13" to replace it. This time SwitchResX did not solve the connection to the LG 25UM65, despite 3 hours of trying during which I learned more about monitors than I ever wanted to know.

I then plugged in the HDMI to HDMI cable which came with the monitor (MBP has an HDMI socket which the MBA did not) and voila, the correct resolution was on the standard list in SwitchResX. Selected it, everything worked.

How to display 2560x1080 on external monitor from MBP or MBA?
