How to display 2560x1080 on external monitor from MBP or MBA?

Is there any way to make MBP 17 (Intel HD and nVidia GT graphics, SnowLeo) or MBA 13 (Mountain Lion) display 2560x1080 on external monitor (LG 29" ultrawide)? My MacPro with RadeonX1900 card (10.5.8) does it perfectly but I cannot find a way to get the laptops to do it. Tried res. switching apps, still no good. Thanks.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hey guys, Im in desperate need of help!!

So I have just got a LG 25" UltraWide Monitor 25UM57 & I cant get it to work on full 2560x1080 resolution. I have tried stuff that you guys have said previously & nothing has worked. Have played around with the settings on SwitchResX & it wont work. I managed to add the 2560x1080 setting that a previous poster gave but when I click it one added in custom settings my monitor goes black then says "Out of Range"???

Just spoke to Apple and - sadly - the problem for me is that the Macbook Air doesn't support the resolution of the monitor 😟

Supported resolutions by MacBook Air early 2015:

1440 by 900 (native), 1280 by 800, 1152 by 720, and 1024 by 640 pixels at 16:10 aspect ratio and 1024 by 768 and 800 by 600 pixels at 4:3 aspect ratio

Hi Emery,

I'm also trying to set up my LG 25UM57 with my MacBook Air 2015 by using SwitchResX and I tried to use the configurations you sent across, however, after editing a few things in the settings the SwitchResX stops allowing me to edit the number (I guess it has presets), so I cannot use the same settings you shared with us.

I guess your monitor is different to mine, isn't it?

Thanks for all the suggestions in the thread. I just bought an LG 29UM57 to use as a second monitor for my MBP (2012) and I was starting to be convinced there was no fix. The jpeg linked from Emeryshores post seems to be working well for me now although I'm currently still running Yosemite and not El Capitan so we'll see what happens when I eventually get around to updating to it. Thanks again.

It doesn't work me. My problem is that my monitor worked fine for 2 months, then one morning it decided to revert to 1080p and not 1440. How was it possible it worked fine, and then one morning just stop working? Is the problem with my monitor or laptop?

It displays at 1080p, but if I try and change it to 2560 x 1440 (see image), the image is shrunk. Other resolutions work fine.User uploaded file
