Mail Rebuild

I wish to rebuild my MacPro's mail but Rebuild is greyed out. How can I achieve this please? The reason for wanting a rebuild is because I've now over a dozen deleted emails that have retained headers in my incoming mail area after having been deleted and I can't get rid of those headers.

MacPro - 2 x 250 HD 500gb Ext. Lacie- 6gb RAM - FCS2 - FCP6.05 - DVD SP, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

OK, just asking, is there more than one account in the Inbox, mine has 5 and highlighting Inbox it's still grayed out, I have to open the inbox & choose one of the 5.

If it still doesn't work...

Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.

Move this Folder to the Desktop...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/

Move this file to the Desktop...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index

Reboot.

If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup

Note, in 10.5 & up /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/ may or may not exist.

Thanks for that, BD. I've sort of solved it . . . and it deserves an explanation because I lost the contents of the Inbox - but I'm OK because my ISP is Virgin and there is a seperate inbox in my Virgin Mail page the recent contents of which I can send to my desktop inbox. I'm now resuming from an emppty inbox. (Hope that makes sense to you.)

To achieve my 'mistake' I had noted that I had Virgin mentioned as one of the accounts in the inbox and decided to delete it. (I have to go the ISP screen and select Mail for my Virgin Mail) I clicked delete and it remained there but the c omplete content of my inbox disappeared, leaving nothing in the Trash and noithing in the main Trash either.

I will download your comments above for any possible future use and will mark up this subject as Solved. Have some points!
