Is the security WPA, WPA2 or WEP?
If WEP, change your WiFi base station to use WPA or preferably WPA2. WEP is not secure (can be cracked in under a minute), and it has problems with properly entering passwords from Apple products.
If you must have a WEP key make sure it is ONLY using Key 1, never Keys 2, 3, or 4 as Apple products will not talk to the other 3 keys.
Also if staying with WEP then make your password exactly 5 (if using 64-bit WEP) or 13 (if usng 128-bit WEP) characters long. Then you should be able to enter the password as text. Any other length and the password is munged to fit in the 64 or 128 bit fields and you are forced to enter the hexidecimal value of the encoded password into the Apple device.
Better to reconfigure the WiFi base station to use WPA2, as you get a secure WiFi network and you can enter the same text password on all devices, Macs, iPhones, iPads, Windows, Android, XBox, etc...
