so I am back at square one - same message I do receive since I did a full restore of my laptop from the time machine backup -

This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 248.04 GB but only 212.07 GB are available.

Latest successful backup: 27.12.12 at 18:39

So this morning I have followed pondinis tips switching off the TC and reconnecting it - I also seem to have no backups available after my complete restore, but I am sure they are somewhere on the TC.

It is something you probably need to archive off the old backups and start over.. once you have restored there really should not be stuff you need again.. but archive is only available in v5 firmware.

You can copy the sparsebundle to another location though manually.. and in fact that might be faster.

See Q18 in pondini FAQ.

Then do an erase in the TC. quick one.

And start over with a fresh clean backup.

That sounds like it's trying to do a full backup -- if there's roughly 210 GB on your system (Time Machine adds 20% or so for workspace).

If so, and you did a full restore (by starting from your Recovery HD), Time Machine should have automatically "associated" your restored internal HD with the old backups. It sounds like it didn't, and is treating it as a different one. 😟

You may be able to manually tell it to "associate" the restored disk with the old backups, per #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting. You'll need the procedure in the pink box there.

Hi - I just tried doing what you suggest, locating the "old" backups is somehow tricky, it seems that I only have newer once (after the restore event) - I located the backup folder by typing Got to Folder => /volume and the screen shoot shows what I get, there is also a time machine back up icon on my desktop (I assume that appeared when I double clicked the sparce bundle file)...OMG I am so lost here, I am a bloody laptop user, no IT gen at all here I am afraight;) User uploaded file

The MobileBackups folder contains only the Local Snapshots -- on your internal HD. Not what you want.

Those are your "real" backups, on your Time Capsule. If it's still there, select that and double-click it to open it. Then you'll see another Backups.backupdb folder, like the one in the pink box in #B6.

If it's not still there, follow the instructions in the green box of #B6 to get it back.

Thx - tried it - though I could perform the pink as well as the green box from B6 the message from the terminal was indicating that something (there is no snapshot) is not working. attached the message (the backup performed afterwards did still not work). Looking at the backup folders it still seems to me that I still did not find the former backups before the restore Dec 27th. Sorry for running circles here. GUser uploaded file

so at least I am now a lot faster performing B6 even the results are as foreseen by you - disappointing (no snapshot version available)...

Hope your trees are pretty by now - any chance I can have my Backups working again on the current Time Capsule infrastructure (I do not care so much if my historic backups are reconnected or not - as long as my current data volume is saved again by TimeMachine I will be fine (especially my iphoto library...)
