How do I update my iPhoto on my external hard drive with photos from my Mac without deleting photos that I have previously transferred?

I am scared of deleting files but I just want to transfer my photos from my iPhoto on my Mac to the iphoto that already has my other photos on my external hard drive. Thanks for the help!
