First time garageband user ??

I'm new to Garageband and recording in general, so I'm not as well-versed as most. I just got a new mac and tried hooking up to garageband for the first time. I've got a Scarlett Focusrite 2i interface that I hooked up into. I tried recording my first thing on garageband, but there's no sound at all. I've tried almost everything and can't hear anything. What am I doing wrong, or what do I need to do to be able to hear? Thanks!
