Ipad disappearing inbox emails

I just got an iPad 2 and I have ios 6.0.1 on it. When I first bought it, it came with ios 6.

My main email account is a pop3 but there is no sync at all involved. Once it downloads onto my computer or ipad, it's downloaded onto those devices, no changes can be made. I only have 3 mailboxes in this account, inbox, sent, and delete. There is no way to add a sub folder that I know of.

At first it was once about two weeks that all of a sudden, all the inbox mailed would disappear spontaneously from my inbox folder. The first three times it happened, it was once every two weeks, now it's once a day or every other day and I can't live with this problem because my main reason to get the ipad 2 was for email, particularly this email account.

If I have not deleted my computer inbox messages, they are still on my computer but usually they have been deleted too so I've lost the emails. If I do have them on my computer, I can forward them to my ipad until the next time they disappear. It just shouldn't be happening. This never happened with my iPad 1. Which I may have to go back to. Then why did I buy an iPad 2?

I've called Apple and the iPad specialist didn't have a clue and said he had never heard of it before. He said that he would send it to the engineering department and I've not heard back. That was 5 days ago.

Also I do not use iCloud at all.

My gmail account has never done this but Hotmail has a few times. I can always retrieve the Hotmail by deleting and starting over, then it downloads whatever was in my inbox, but this is different, very different.

Can anyone help me please? Has anyone else had this problem?

Thank

iPad 2, iOS 6.0.1, 16 gig

If this is your gmail account, we are having the same problem. However we are accessing through IMAP on iPhone and iPad. 38 messages were in the inbox this afternoon, we did a backup in Time Machine. This evening, only 2 are left! All we did was read them. No delete, no archiving, no moving. If it's gmail, I suspect gmail is the problem, although try geting anyone from customer service to help (psst...there is no customer service at Google) I have all the pics and a video detailing ti all. Can't get anyone to believe me.

I believe you!

No, it's not gmail, it's Hotmail and a small server email account I have from town that is a pop3 account. And both Hotmail and the other account's mail will disappear the same time on the times that Hotmail disappears which isn't as often as my other account. My gmail account hasn't done this on my ipad at all. My problem is coming from my ipad thinking it's supposed to delete and I have no clue why. Once my email is downloaded onto my ipad, nothing the server does or doesn't do can effect it anymore with these accounts which is why I know it's some other problem.

The short answer is don't use POP. POP causes all sorts of headaches when you are accessing from multiple machines. It was designed back when server space was severely limited and connections were on dial-up. You are far better off using IMAP. Unless there is a really important reason to use POP (I can't think of one), switch to IMAP. It just works.

We've been on IMAP for past 7 months once my wife finally let go of her PC and Outlook. Everything is IMAP. iPhones, iPad, Mac mini, MBPro. I have had no issues with my gmail, but my wife's gmail which was just created a couple of months ago, has the constant deletion problem. Not deleted...they just get their labels removed (Googlespeak). I have emails with labels from 2009 and even earlier, but she just had her inbox lables wiped yesterday.

Daniel, that server of mine they told me won't work with IMAP, it's not set up to work on IMAP. I had tried before contacting them and of course it didn't work. And as I said, the problem is not with my server, it's with the mail once it's downloaded, it's with my ipad software or ipad.

Uskrums, sorry I can't offer you anything about the gmail problem.

Thanks all,

Martha

Don't know if thi problem is related, but in Mail, my notes that are synched with iCloud keep disappearing the same way my wife's email does. One minute they are there and then days, weeks, or even a couple months later, "poof" they are gone. Luckily I back up to Time Machine. I keep retrieving them, they are there in my notes folder of mail both on my MBP and iPhone and then they will disappear.

My solution so far was to disable POP3 from the google website. We didn't have any accounts set up for POP3, but I decided to disable that from the gmail site anyway. I then didn't access the mail from iPhone or iPad for 1 week (to troubleshoot and see if it was gmail based.

After a week we had no losses and we have started to access via iPhone and iPad...so far so good.

I am having the same problem on my ipad2 with wi-fi only Model A1395. No problem with my ipad with wifi and verizon 4G capability (I am not using the Verizon connection). Model A1403.

I am using a local ISP for my email account - a VERY good one, so I would be surprised if they are the problem.

Using IMAP as incoming mail server and SMTP for outgoing mail server (probably not the problem). On the advanced tab: Incoming Settings have Use SSL = Off, No IMAP Path Prefix; Authentication: password; and Server Port 143.

Emails usually vanish within minutes after arriving in the inbox. Right before my eyes. I'm (sort of) glad to hear I am not the only one.

Hi Don,

I will let you know what they figure out IF they do. I have a case worker is communicating with the engineers. It would be nice if someone can resolve this but no one seems to have an answer yet.

It "is" good to know we are not alone.

In my "settings" I went ahead and activated "ask before deleting" in the mail settings and am waiting to see if that makes a difference. My server can not be the problem either.

You mean "Ask before deleting?" Thats encouraging! Since mine doesn't disappear for a few days to two weeks I have to wait to see if mine will or not, but yours was disappearing right away so I am very encouraged! Thanks for sharing that! Do let me know if this works for you after some time goes by! I hope this is the answer for us!!!!
