Ipad disappearing inbox emails

I just got an iPad 2 and I have ios 6.0.1 on it. When I first bought it, it came with ios 6.

My main email account is a pop3 but there is no sync at all involved. Once it downloads onto my computer or ipad, it's downloaded onto those devices, no changes can be made. I only have 3 mailboxes in this account, inbox, sent, and delete. There is no way to add a sub folder that I know of.

At first it was once about two weeks that all of a sudden, all the inbox mailed would disappear spontaneously from my inbox folder. The first three times it happened, it was once every two weeks, now it's once a day or every other day and I can't live with this problem because my main reason to get the ipad 2 was for email, particularly this email account.

If I have not deleted my computer inbox messages, they are still on my computer but usually they have been deleted too so I've lost the emails. If I do have them on my computer, I can forward them to my ipad until the next time they disappear. It just shouldn't be happening. This never happened with my iPad 1. Which I may have to go back to. Then why did I buy an iPad 2?

I've called Apple and the iPad specialist didn't have a clue and said he had never heard of it before. He said that he would send it to the engineering department and I've not heard back. That was 5 days ago.

Also I do not use iCloud at all.

My gmail account has never done this but Hotmail has a few times. I can always retrieve the Hotmail by deleting and starting over, then it downloads whatever was in my inbox, but this is different, very different.

Can anyone help me please? Has anyone else had this problem?

Thank

iPad 2, iOS 6.0.1, 16 gig

OK, thanks Dogsmaster, I finally got it :

your account is an IMAP account, ++NOT++ a POP account.

With IMAP, the iPad reflects the folder hierarchy created initially through the IMAP web access.

But since the beginning of this thread, the issue has NEVER been with IMAP accounts, but with ++POP++ accounts, which should NEVER delete anything from any folder on the iPad, once the emails have been downloaded once.

Unfortunately, since iOS 6.x, the POP emails downloaded into the Inbox DO disappear after some unpredictable time, whatever settings you select on the iPad/iPhone.

And unfortunately too, your new folder creation does NOT work with POP accounts, where you can only have the 4 usual folders : Inbox / Draft / Sent / Thrash.

We then come back to square one and the only solution which "worked" (poorly) for me : once read, move all your inbox emails to Thrash, where they will NOT randomly disappear.

BTW, the proper YouTube link for your -2 post is : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMc9UPl3g6g

Oh, OK. Yup, my account is a POP account. I am with Australian ISP Telstra, and they do not support IMAP, so I'm stuck with POP and limited email folders on the iPad it seems. I use the Mail program on my Mac, not Outlook, not GMail.

It's not good if emails just disappear... is this actually an iPad issue or an ISP issue?

If anybody else finds a bright idea to create new folders within the POP protocol we'd love to know it!

Sorry for the error with the link. I copied and pasted, so don't know where the other characters came from.

Now: You are incorrect about my account being IMAP. I do have one that is,(Nethop), but the hotmail accounts, now totaling 3 are all POP. I set up a new account today through hotmail. I accessed it on my laptop, and made a subfolder for "Apple Forum" communication. Then I went to the ipad, and the account is there, under "Accounts", but the forum file isn't. The difference that I see is that the new dogsmaster3 account doesn't show the envelope symbol synonymous of hotmail, but the blue ampersand icon indicative of Outlook Express. Also, the new account did show a POP File under the trash one. Differences between the Outlook Express account on the ipad, versus on the laptop tell me that hotmail accounts that have been set up since Outlook took over hotmail, do not work properly on the ipad. On the laptop, a tool bar across the top allows movement of file. I did use Safari to go to the new account, and emails can be filed from there, but not directly from the apple mailbox.

Like the lighthouse said to the USS Enterprise, your move. Good luck.

My humble suggestion... I think you need to go through whatever search engine? you use, and access your email account from there to create and manage files. I have had to do that with my nethop.net account ever since it was set up. It is a pain, but those files have never disappeared.

You will likely find that you are not limited to the 4files the geejii mentioned.

CodyFay, ages ago I unchecked the 'Remove copy from server after retrieving a message', and indeed the messages DO remain on the server as I want, but they still sometimes disappear from my iPad!

I can delete messages on my i devices and they still stay on the server until I delete them from the server.

Also, Dogsmaster, I created a new folder within my server's webmail account on my Mac, but that folder doesn't migrate across to either my iPad or iPhone.

It just seems on my iPad I don't have any 'Accounts' window within 'Mail'. I can manage/create folders on the server, but whatever I create there stays there and goes to no devices, and whatever folders I create within my 'Mail' program on my Mac also only stay on my Mac.

Thanks a lot for this link Codyfay. Going through other links mentioned there I finally solved a gmail.com irritating mystery I have had for YEARS : when using the POP access to gmail.com, you need to configure "recent:your_email.gmail.com" as POP address (instead of "your_email.gmail.com") if you want to see incoming messages which have already been downloaded once by some other POP emailer on an other device; and that even when you configured gmail POP Download settings with "keep Gmail's copy in the inbox".

Note that this gmail POP behavior is then still inconsistent with proper POP behavior, since the "recent:" prefix limits the new downloads to 1 month after the first initial download, while a proper POP server would have no such limit.

Regarding the subfolders Dogsmaster seems able to create when everybody else cannot, it may be some peculiarity of his mail provider and/or some peculiarity in the way he configures and uses this email account on his iPad and/or the history of his iPad settings and iOS updates.

But until somebody can provide a reproducible step-by-step way of doing the same on any POP (or mixed POP/IMAP) account, this is probably a dead end for most of us.

For those who see like myself randomly disappearing emails from POP Inbox on iOS Mail, the only proven solution which works for anybody is to "archive" emails once read into the Trash.

This is definitely an iOS 6.x bug, and we can only hope iOS 7.0 correct this very very annoying behavior.

But I would not bet on it since Apple pushes "everything to the Cloud", which is IMAP compatible and kind of opposite with the POP approach.

Right, Marhtafromlas cruces,

I had your problem too, until now. I know what has been causing my emails to dissapear on my device. Here are the steps to fix that, on you iphone, ipad, ipod, whatever your case:

1. Go to Settings (the settings application)

2. Scroll down to and click "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"

3. Under Account click on "Hotmail"

4. See where it says "Mail days to sync"? Click that and choose how many days of mail you want on your device.

Walaaa!!!

Now, to fix your subfolder issue: where other folders other than your main inbox dont show their mail in the main inbox folder on your device; here are the steps to fix that:

1. Go to Settings (the settings application)

2. Scroll down to and click "Mail, Contacts, Calendars"

3. Under Account click on "Hotmail"

4. See where it says "Mail folders to push"? Click that and select all your subInboxes that you want to see on your device.

Walaaaa!!!

Issues Fixed !!!

Geejii, I don't have ios 7 but my ipad 1 has ios 5 and my ipad 2 has ios 6. My ipad 1 has had no problems with emails disappearing.

But with the help of an apple specialist, what helped me most recently when the problem came back after one year of working ok and then disappearing again, was changing the setting on my computer's MAIL program. In the preference folder under accounts, I went to advanced and my MAIL program had been set to delete messages once they came down from the server so I unselected that and my email hasn't disappeared since then. I have noticed that as long as I keep my mails on my server (all emails I want to keep on my ipad) they don't disappear but if I delete some that I want to keep on my ipad, they will disappear again during certain times (not all times) when my pop 3 account checks for new mail. So have you tried that?

I just keep all mail on my server now until I know I don't need it anymore on my ipad, then I delete it from my server using my computer. I have 3 older messages I want to keep on my ipad so I don't delete those 3. I hope it keeps working!

One more thing I wanted to add is that I only have 3 boxes on this pop 3 account, it's impossible to create any new ones - inbox, sent and trash. Only the inbox mail has ever disappeared.
