Try resetting NVRAM/PRAM by holding down cmd-opt-p-r on restart. Keep holding until you hear the startup chime twice.

If it reboots normally, all is good. If it doesn't, you'll probably need to reinstall the OS; however, it could be that your hard drive is dead or dying.

Boot into Recovery HD by holding down cmd-r immediately after the startup tone. Let go when the gray screen appears.

When it boots, select Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD (if you didn't rename it), and go to the Firt Aid Tab. Click Repair Disk. If it finds any errors and repairs them, run repair disk until it comes up clean.

If successful, Try to reboot normally.

If it fails to repair the disk or it doesn't reboot normally, you will need to boot into Recovery again and reinstall the OS. If you don't already have a backup, make one before you reinstall. If you have another Mac, you can boot up in Firewire Target Disk Mode to mount the bad Mac's hard drive on your other Mac. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661

You could use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to make the clone. You also may be able to just copy your data from the bad Mac to the good Mac or another disk attached to the good Mac.
