Why won't my iPod's sound work when charging?

I have an iPod Touch 4G. Maybe, 4 months ago, my sound would turn off and turn on randomly so I couldn't control it. The only way I could listen to music sometimes was through my earbuds. Yesterday, my sound worked the whole day except for the time that I charged it. I've already checked the little dot in the headphone jack and it's white so I have no water damage. Is the only way to get it fixed to go to an Apple store? Because I don't live near one and it would be a 3-4 hour drive. I also don't want to just buy a new iPod because that would be a waste of money.

Try this first:

- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

- Reset all settings

Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
