How do I delete Facebook Messages on my iPad 3 ?

Okay Ive just spent 4 hours researching ways to delete old messages on facebook with no luck. so hopefully someone here can help...

On my iPad 3 I want to delete messages sent through Facebook. These messages shouldnt be showing as I deleted them on my desktop PC previously.

I go into Facebook, the app is just whatever came loaded with my iPad 3. and yes its updated.

I click the Messages Box in the upper left corner.

I click the message

I get a notification at the top of the message that says "There was a problem connecting to Facebook. Please check your connection and try again."

There is no connection problem with Facebook so Im not sure why it says that

looking at the message box on that specific message, I see the messages, a Messages Box upper left corner (which takes you back to all the messages from everyone). I also see a little lower case i symbol. If I click that symbol I get contact info for that person. its someone Im no longer friends with on facebook if that matters. oh and notifications are on

I click back.

from my research Ive seen people telling you to click some button and then deleting it, etc. well Im not seeing any other button with that option.

another thread on another site tells me to swipe left or right. I swipe right. that doesnt give me any options other than a Back button. oh and it just displays one message from the same conversation...my response in that thread

Anyway this is incredibly frustrating. I want to delete these older messages. they dont show up on my desktop PC messages...just this iPad 3

oh and this message is also on my iphone 5

now with the phone I do have some options that I dont see with my iPad 3. but I stil do not see a way to delete this dang conversation

I get the same message when I open it from my iphone 5..."there was a problem connecting to facebook" there isnt a problem though

if i swipe left I see standard Friends at top, below it listsclose friends, family, then a help center, account settings, privacy settings, log out, etc. I dug around there for a while but didnt see any option to delete messages.

if i swipe right I see the word Favorites at the top. above that is a search option. to the right is a weird little symbol kinda like a wheel with gears on it. if i click that it gives me the option of Turn off Chat or Cancel. I did both, it just greys out the friends list that appears. If I click a name, the previous conversation appears. nothing to delete from there, just contact info if I click the i symbol or back to news feed.

ive tried several suggestions but they dont work.

one suggestion for my iphone 5 is to simply click and hold the message. this does bring up the option to Archive the message. i choose this option and for about 1 second the message disappears from my list. then it immediately repops back up. Ive tried this with several messages, some with current friends and others no longer friended. either message, it still repops back up.

If I click and hold a specific message within the conversation I get the option to Copy or Delete. I choose Delete but NOTHING HAPPENS.
