As sophisticated as Apple is why can't they seem to solve the issue of no sender no content 1969! Messages ? Talk about irritating ?!?

Try this before you delete the account. Reset the iPhone
Hold down the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons and let the iPhone start up.
See if the emails disappear or if you can delete them now.
