Ipod touch 2nd generation - IOS 4.3

I'm sorry, but the 2nd generation iPod touch can only be updated to iOS 4.2.1. You are not talking with Apple here, even I doubt that they will release a newer version for the 2nd generation iPod touch

No. The 2G can only go to iOS 4.2.1

It is the developer, not Apple who dropped compatibility for iOS 4.2.1

The 2nd gen can not be upgraded beyond 4.2.1.

As a developer I would like to make it clear that Apple is forcing us developers to drop support for anything less than iOS 4.3. Here is how it goes: Starting May 1, 2013, Apple will no longer accept app submissions (new or updated) for the app store unless they support the 4-inch iPhone 5 screen resolution. The only way we can test our apps for compliance is with the latest version of Xcode, the development software from Apple. But the latest version of Xcode does not support iOS earlier than 4.3. So we are stuck. I would dearly love to continue supporting the iPod Touch 2nd generation. But Apple has tied my hands.

I'd like to read some links on this if you have some. Does this mean that all new apps will have to be written to have two screen shapes for the iphone 5 and 4? That it will be unacceptable to have new apps with thin black bars along the sides of the wider screens?

That article contains an error a number of us have been trying to get Apple to correct/clarify for months. The fact remains that a 2nd-generation iPod touch cannot run any version of iOS later than 4.2.1.

I got curious and I found some iOS 4.2.1 compatible apps which say "optimized for iPhone 5" and whose previews show the tall screen. Two examples are Pets Amino and Snowman Maker.

I did find an article that backs up your claims about the iTunes store rejecting apps for older devices. I just suspect that the article is wrong.

It could also be that the app description are wrong. That is not that unusual.

Actually, it is possible to support 4.2 as well as newer versions but it's not easy. I do this for my app because I want to run it on my old iPod! Xcode doesn't come with a 4.2 SDK, but it's possible to install the 4.2 SDK in the newer Xcode and tweak the settings so that you can build against it.
