Does this happen using all WiFi networks or just in your home network? If it only happens at your home, try restarting your router.

Quit the mail app completely and restart the iPad. Double tap the home button (from a home screen, not while in the mail app) and then hold down on the mail icon in the recents tray at the bottom. Tap the red minus sign to close Mail. Tap the home button and restart the iPad. Then try mail again.

If still unsuccessful, quit mail again, and turn mail off in the settings, restart the iPad and turn mail on again.

Quit mail first, like I described above. then go to Settings>Mail, contacts, calendars>Your email account>Mail>Off. Or Settings>Mail, contacts, calendars>Your email account>Account>Off.

Restart your iPad, go back to the settings and turn mail on again and try again.
