i want to connect my macbook pro to a hdmi tv

I have connected my macbook pro to my tv via a mini displayport to hdmi adapter. But I am not getting any video or audio on the TV.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), My TV is a Hitachi 42HSD69 Plasma
