What does the number in the red circle mean on calendar?

And how do I get rid of it? I would have guessed it's trying to show me there is some event today but it's been like this for a week and opening the calendar and scanning all the events doesn't make it go away.

It is a so-called "Badge app icon", notifying you of e.g. an invitation that someone sent you. So, you may check for invitations. Once accepted or denied, it'll be gone.

By default, it's the same as for the Mail or Messages icons: if something new has come in, you see the badge app icon, so you know without having the app open. Isn't it wonderful...? 😉

You can enable or disable this for all app icons:

-> System Preferences -> Notifications, then select an app in the left pane (e.g. Calendar). In the right pane, (un-)check "Badge app icon" as per your liking.

This is a notification - maybe you may have canceled an appointment that you made from an email or text. It will show up as a message with a red circle on your calendar. The way you get rid of it is open a calendar on your iPhone, at the bottom right is the word "inbox" - you'll see a number on that. If you touch inbox it will take you to another page with the listing of the notifications. You may delete them from there.

i looked and looked yesterday to try to figure it out ... LousyFool is correct, it was connected to an invitation. When you open your calendar program, up at the top left are the three colored buttons (to close, minimize, etc). Just below that, there is a gray box that says Calendars, just to the right of that is a plus sign, then my notification was just to the right of that. Sort of looked like an envelope. When I on it , it opened and I was able to manage it and the badge app icon on my calendar went away. Thanks.
