MacBook Does Not Recognize iPhone and Fails to Install iTunes

Recently, my sister's MacBook has failed to recognise the iPhone (4S) and I have deleted the AppleMobileDevice thingy but now the installer does not install iTunes. I have repaired the disk using Disk Utility but that seems to do little to help. The version is OSX 10.6.8, Intel Core 2 Duo.

iPod touch, iOS 5.1, Still has warrenty
