how can i determine that my iPhone 5 (A1429) is a GSM or CDMA model?

I have bought the iphone 5 which is a A1429 but I can't figure out if its a GSM or CDMA model. My country supports only GSM networks.

iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.2

Some people want to know the model of their iphone to attempt using it to another network and what not.

http://theiphonewiki.com/wiki/Models

Here is a good chart of the different models and stuff. A client for example purchased an used iphone5 online and attempted to use it on Tmobile. However, his new phone to his surprise turned out to be the CDMA+GMS global version designed for sprint. (He didnt understood the differences between the different iPhones 5)

This according to the link below meant he would not have LTE speeds but EDGE 2.5/3G

In most cases the only way to check which Iphone 5 or 4 you have is by accessing its rom via a 3rd party aplication such as redsn0w and checking the Model Number (ie,MD298, MD655, MD657, ME040) or its Identifier (ie, iphone 5,1-5,2).

I believe you can check this info on itunes and in Settings if phone is activated. 🙂

Sorry to reply to this but this thread seems to have expertise I may need.

I have an exchange student living with us (usa) from Germany. She purchased an iphone5 in Germany and brought it with her to the US. A1429 model

We have an activated iphone5 sim (Verizon) for her to use to be part of our plan.

The sim when inserted only recognizes the LTE network. She can send and receive data via LTE but sees no bars and cannot place or recieve calls.

From reading above I assume she has the GSM model. Not knowing all the GSM bands in the US and knowing that Verizon is CDMA, is it worth having her swap her phone for a CDMA model? Will that impact her phone's performance when she returns to Germany with a CDMA A1429.

From this site, http://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/ it seems having the cdma version only enhances the phone but I dont know what it does to the GSM capabilty. When she gets back to rural Germany, will the phone work?

I dont want to ruin this girls phone.

Verizon is a CDMA carrier. Voice calls do not travel over LTE on the iPhone. You can not use an unlocked iPhone like she has with Verizon. Your choices for supported carriers that she can use her existing phone with are AT&T and T-Mobile. She will not be able to get LTE.

She can not "swap her phone" for a CDMA model. She can buy a Verizon iPhone if she wants, and the phone will most likely work just fine for her in Germany, however, if it ever needs serviced, it will have to be brought back to the US.

Kilted Tim,

You explained in 1min what has taken hours on the phone with Verizon and Apple. Neither of those companies could put this together despite me telling them it was a German iphone bought from apple.

How frustrating.

We will get her a Tmobile data plan. she will just have to live without lte. She doesnt have LTE in her hometown anyway.

thanks

The only models that are sold in the US work in the US and might not be compatible with Cyprus, so if you want to buy from the US, go to the Apple store and purchase an unlocked GSM version of the phone, but it might not be the same model as you would get in Cyprus and it might not support the same frequency either. Unfortunately, if you choose to purchase in the US, that is the chance you take and there is nothing you can do because in the US they will sell models that work there and not in other countries.

Best advice is to wait and purcahse an iPhone 5s in Cyprus or at least in another European country and NOT the US and there is more chance of it being compatible. Not a good idea to purchase from the US.
