album art question

Here is one way to do it: Let Apple fetch all your artwork, replace the incorrect ones, then use "Re-Embed artwork" iTunes script from Doug's iTunes Scripts for OSX 10.6.6 and newer (the older version is called "Embed artwork" and doesn't work in Lion and is limited to one album at a time). Please make a donation if you find the script(s) useful, and make sure to read the included README for detailed instructions. This site is awesome, I use a bunch of scripts to manage various aspects of iTunes. I do still manage artwork manually using the "Find artwork with Google" script and paste it into iTunes. I wouldn't recommend this method if you had an entire library without any artwork...

Please be aware that you cannot yet run ANY scripts in iTunes 11. Somehow that functionality has been lost in the upgrade from 10

I have a question on here AND I have raised it with Apple.

You can purchase the TrackSift App to run on your Mac together with Dupin (duplicate tracks).

I am using iTunes 11.0.1 and so far all of my iTunes scripts still work. I have also read that it still works for others, too, so it must be related to your specific setup/system.

I have a top of the range early 2011 MacBook Air and am running the latest updated iTunes 11.0.1 (12).

I have scanned every menu icon, drop down and pop up yet cannot find the script running option.

Please identify where this functionality appears on your iTunes.

you have to create a folder named "Scripts" under either "Library\iTunes" (if you want other users on your laptop use these scripts) or "your home folder\Library\iTunes" (the Library folder in your home folder is hidden, select the "Go" menu in Finder while holding down the "Option" key and "Library will appear and can then be selected) and place your iTunes Apple Scripts inside this "Scripts" folder. You then will see the Scripts menu in iTunes and a list of scripts you placed inside this folder. Each Apple Script from Doug's includes these instructions. Let me know if this worked for you.

Thank you for the specific response, I am checking everything for the umpteenth time since upgrading to iTunes 11. I want to run some of the scripts on my files/track parameters to tidy up my library/files

I have two libraries:-

Network Storage Library for home in the appropriate directory as defined in my Prefences->Advanced->Library Location for that library.

External Hard Drive Library for away from home in the appropriate directory as defined in my Prefences->Advanced->Library Location for that library (Harddrive/Music).

I had the some scripts downloaded and running in iTunes 10.7 but have been trying to work out why they dont work in 11 and 11.0.1 on my Macbook.

So, the scripts are there but there is just no script running option to be found within the drop downs, pop ups or anything. I am not someone who asks for help reguarly but with this I am completely stumped.

did you use the scripts on the same MacBook that now runs 11.0.1? When I mentioned "Library" I did not mean iTunes Library but the Library folders on your Mac. Please check if there is a folder named "Scripts" in your iTunes folder under username (homefolder icon)\Library\iTunes. Hold down the option key while you select the "Go" menu in the Finder, then select the now appearing Library folder. Inside the Library folder you'll find a folder named iTunes (if not create one), then, if not already, create a folder inside this folder and name it "Scripts". Then place all your Apple iTunes Scripts inside this folder. Make sure to go to Doug's iTunes Scripts website to make sure your scripts are compatible with your OS and version of iTunes. There are further instructions on how to run scripts in iTunes. I still run scripts from 2006 and earlier. Let me know if that resolved your issue.

In the Artist list or the song list, select the songs you want have Artwork in, that is select many more than are in just one album, then choose "clear downloaded Artwork", when that has been done, choose "Get Album Artwork" and the Artwork (if avalaible) will be in all those songs.

the "Re-Embed artwork" script runs with multiple albums, I would give it a try to see how long it takes for the process and elevate it to the maximum number it can handle. You can always shoot Doug (see link to his website above) an email to ask him about the scripts capabilities. Once you are caught up with your artwork, it will only be one album at a time if you keep up with it. There used to be a couple artwork scripts, the best one was "Fetch Amazon Art" which would fetch and embed it automatically but it could handle also only one album at a time.

BTW: if you do not trust the "clear downloaded Artwork", you can get ALL the artwork out by rightclicking the selection an checking the Artwork Field while nothing is in that field, and the click OK.

Scott wants the album art embedded into the file, and not Apple's way of keeping it in a separate album art folder.

Thanks for the reply, I have been checking all things to try and get it working.

I used the same MacBook with up to date Mountain Lion.

I do not have a library file unless it is hidden.

My directory structure is as follows:-

User

Desktop

Music

Documents

Downloads

Etc

Then in music:-

GarageBand

iTunes

Music Converter

The iTunes folder has everything I expect including the directory I ran the scripts from in 10.7 last year. That directory is named Scripts and contains several I want to use and also to amend to learn the language.

So is there a hidden directory I need access to and how do I do that?

What am I not doing? After 20+ years of PC's I find Macs easy except for this little problem that is frustrating.

sorry about getting diverted into another issue, I think I now do have a somewhat better solution which is still not fully automatic but it will preserve the current artwork of each album. Nevertheless, depending on the size of your library, it will take some time and manual effort to get it done. There is a script that will copy the current artwork as a jpg into the album folder as a backup. Now you can clear all artwork, let Apple do the fetching, replace the ones which are wrong with your back up (script available) and then run the re-embed artwork script. See artwork scripts on Doug's website.

There simply is no easy and automated way to capture and embed artwork in iTunes. And now that iTunes 11 has made access to artwork even more tidious, you might just let Apple take care of your artwork and use select scripts on tracks you need the artwork to be embedded.
