Macbook Retina Fans Getting Loud Without Heat

Hello everyone,

Two days ago I bought my MBP with retina display, but I am afraid there is something wrong with it. Sometimes when i'm using it, the fans get very loud eventhough the macbook itself is prety cool. I would like to know if this is a problem or if it can happen sometimes…Oh! And when the fans get very loud, it just lasts about 5 to 10 seconds and then goes "cloaked" again. Could somebody say if there is anything wrong with my MBP, please?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities

First of all, reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 It will reset fans to their default setting, so it should solve your problem

You might want to do a couple of things after you reset the SMC:

Get the 14-day free trial of iStat Menus 4 to monitor the heat sensors and fan speeds in your MBP.

Use Activity Monitor (Applications>Utilities folder) to monitor, by CPU %, any runaway processes that may be causing the fans to rev up.

Thank you! I did it and it simply made my Macbook run without over-speeding the fans and vans.

I have the exact same problem and the SMC reset didn't help. Took it into the Mac store and they ran diagnostics overnight and said everything is fine.

There is no way the fans should run so loudly, and for seemingly no reason. I have 2011 Macbook Pro and Macbook Air machines and both are quiet.

Seems that my only option is to take advantage of Apple's 14-day return policy and get another machine. Unless someone has a better idea...

I can confirm that my 15" MacBook Pro Retina Display with 2.3GHz Core i7 processor / 8GB RAM / 256GB SSD (made by SanDisk) is indeed having this same issues with the fan, is very annoying !. I bought this machine on December 2012 and it has a Samsung screen (not LG) if it matters.

Most of the time the fan kicks start up to full speed even just surfing the web with only a couple of tabs open and no other applications running at all, the machine itself is actually cold (not even warm) to the touch of the hand.

I really hope this is software related so Apple could fix it with a new firmware update. So Apple please fix it asap !
