Sync session failed to start

Although both iTunes and the iPad are up-to-date, I now get the following error message when attempting to sync my iPad2 (even when plugged in by USB) -


User uploaded file

I've restarted the iPad several times, but still get this error message. Oddly, new book items are added to the iPad when selected in iTunes. Any clues on how to sync without the error message?

iPad 2 Wi-Fi, Other OS, iOS 6.0.1
