Why does my iMac (on occasion) not shut down, warning message comes on saying i have to switch off by pressing and holding the power button then restart, something to do with a Panic report?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    It's a kernel panic > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3742

Next time you see the kernel panic, copy the log here, so we can identify what the problem is. You can see it when you start your Mac after seeing a kernel panic, so you will see a "Your computer was restarted because of a problem". On this window, select "Report..." and copy all the content in the text box

First, update VMware Fusion to the most recent version. You are running an outdated version.

See if that works. If not, disconnect all peripherals before you turn off the Mac

  • knight58 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

WOW!!, Thank you mende1 that's what i call a quick reply, wasn't expecting that. This is going to sound like i'm a total idiot but can you tell me how to update VMware Fusion please, also what is it as i don't even know what this is.

do you think i have too many peripherals attached?

sorry mende1 not very good at IMacs i'm afraid.

    Thank you

    Brian "the Dummy" Lol

  • mende1 Level 10 Level 10 (91,125 points)

To update VMware Fusion, open it and go to VMware Fusion menu (on the menu bar) > Check for Updates.

I think you have a lot of peripherals, but if VMware Fusion update solves your problem, there's nothing to worry about them

  • knight58 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

    Hi mende1,

I can't seem to find VMware fusion on my mac! i can find Bootcamp though, i don't think my mac has VMware fusion installed.

    P.S. see i told you i was a dummy!!

  • mende1 Level 10 Level 10 (91,125 points)

Press Command and Space keys, so Spotlight will appear at the top right corner. Then, type "VMware Fusion", without quotes, and open the application

  • knight58 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

    Hi mende,

Sorry to bug you again, think i should forget it as I did as you requested and nothing came up in either this Mac or in all files, think my mac does not have MVware Fusion on it, not sure where to go now but thanks for your help though much appreciated.

  • mende1 Level 10 Level 10 (91,125 points)

In that case, you installed it in the past and you uninstalled it without using the uninstaller, or something similar. Have you checked if you have any other VMware application?

  • knight58 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Tried typing in MVware & searched ...........nothing came up, i did have bootcamp installed at one point but found i wasn't using it so i think i took it off by dragging to the bin, is this the reason i'm getting this warning message & my Mac running slow on occasion?

  • mende1 Level 10 Level 10 (91,125 points)

It's not possible to uninstall Boot Camp dragging the Windows partition to the Trash. Are you sure it was Boot Camp and not VMware Fusion? Note that VMware Fusion has got a feature that allows you to use the Boot Camp partition on OS X without restarting

  • knight58 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Yes i think it was VMware as i did not need to restart in order to open up windows on my Mac but it was so long ago!! i suppose i can't get it back now eh? can i ask why would this be causing the warning message?

  • mende1 Level 10 Level 10 (91,125 points)

I'm not completely sure if the problem is VMware Fusion or one of your peripherals, but one of the VMware extensions can be in conflict with other ones that Mac OS X needs, and cause the kernel panic. I recommend you to download VMware Fusion 3 again (if you can access to it) and use the uninstaller that it includes to remove everything
