Questions about font numbers

Back in the days of yore (System 7, Mac OS 8 and 9), we were advised to minimize the number of fonts, otherwise you could get system crashed.

1) With Mac OS X, is it still a good idea to minimize the number of fonts? After installing Microsoft Office and QuarkXPress, I now have 289 fonts.

2) If so, as far as performance is concerned, is disabling a font as good as deleting a font?

3) I know the fonts I use; it is only a few. Is there any other fonts that I should not mess with (because system utilities use them)?

Thank you in advance for any advice, insights and suggestions!

Here is a list of the System Fonts that are installed:

  1. Mountain Lion
  2. Lion
  3. Snow Leopard
  4. IOS 6
  5. IOS 5

Microsoft article on Office for Mac 2011, where fonts are installed, and which OS X fonts are stepped on.

For font management, you may wish to try Linotype's FontExplorerX for Mac here.

FontExplorerX can rebuild your font cache. So can rebooting the Mac in Safe Boot Mode. You would reboot normally following Safe Boot Mode.
