How to convert files for transfer

I borrowed a friends camera Canon XF300 and am shooting in 1920x1080 30p. We have been moving the data files to a laptop, but need to convert the files to import to FCP7. What's a good conversion software for this?

Alright, David...I think I really blew it! We got the plug-in and loaded up games from the cards, However, the files we uploaded from the MacBook (We transferred some over to free up the cards) aren't coming through. I only transferred the Actual File Folders, not the "Parent" folder. I didn't see anything in them, so didn't think they were needed.

Questions now...is there any way to reconstruct the files without the original shell/parent folders?

OY VEY! If you can reconstruct the file structure, even if the folders were empty...do it. And then follow this workflow tutorial.

ALWAYS back up the full card...make a folder, give that folder a unique "reel number," and copy everything on that card into that folder. OR...use ShotPut Pro to do the backup for you.

Thanks for joining in, Shane. Question is, Can you reconstruct it just by adding the "Empty" folders? We tried this, but it seems the files that were not captured with the folders titled...

....still aren't recognized. We tried adding thes "Dummy" folders, but can't seem to Fake Out Final Cut. We also had a card with the raw files on it and added the other files that were brought in without the "parent" folder, but FCP won't recognize these. It seems that if all the info is there, there must be some way to construct them, but I just can't figure out how....

My wife actually watched your video last night, but still can't find that "Magic Bullet"

You will need to convert the MOD files to work in iMovie.

You will need MXF Converter (which is free download). Download Mac MXF to FCP Converter here.

Drag your MXF file into MXF Video Converter. Then, click FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME. Choose Apple Intermediate Codec as your video codec. Leave the audio codec as uncompressed (or AAC should work as well). Name and save the file to a place where you an find it later.

You can now import it into FCP by using the FILE/IMPORT MOVIE command from the top menu.

You can use the free Canon XF Log and Transfer Plugin to help you transcode and import the XF300 1080 30p videos to FCP 7. When importing, you should choose ProRes 422 HQ as the editing format.

If your plugin doesn't work well with your Mac OS X, you can use the MXF Converter for Mac to encode MXF to proRes 422 HQ .mov with 1080 30p quality, then directly copy the converted file to FCP 7 for further editing.

Have a good time on editing and watching your HD movies.
