I have a DVD in AVI format and my MacBook Pro tells me it can't play it on Quicktime "because a required codec isn't available." It gives me the buttons "OK" and "Tell Me More" and "To see if additional software is available that will enable QuickTime Player to open the movie, click Tell Me More." But that just takes me to a page listing formats that play on Quicktime... of course AVI is listed.
An ideas?

Try installing Perian. AVI is a container, not a format.

I already had Perian, but did update it today. Still no luck getting the DVD to play. The thumbnail does show me the initial still shot.
Download MPEG Streamclip, try opening the movie in it, and if it says it needs a component, install that.

This didn't help, but thanks for the idea. I am trying "Flip4Mac" which is supposed to help Macs download Windows media.
This let me open it, after I changed my preferences to allow outside delvelopers. Thanks! Now, let's see if I can save it to a format that allows le to share it. :-)
