what should i do if the usb im using for an iPod shuffle 2nd generation isnt recognised?

I have recently had to purchase a new iPod shuffle 2nd generation dock system and i have just tried connecting it to the computer but my computer comes up with "USB Not Recognised" and I have tried to use different USB ports on my laptop but it still doesnt recognize it. Also the charge light doesnt come on either but my laptop makes the noise that you hear when something is connected to the laptop... but ive kist connected it to my mum's USB plug charger for her iPhone and it is charging the shuffle. ... what do i do???
