Hard Drive monitor clips when I press play ?

Im coming to the end of a project and my track has 42 channels of Audio. Ive started having problems when bouncing midi into audio. It either just doesnt work or it leaves me with and audio block full of white noise.

When I press play on a project, the HD monitor shoots into the Red and then goes back to zero whilst the track is running.

My CPU hardly moves its just the HD level that seems to be the problem.

My system details are below ..

Thanks

Macbook Pro Mac OS X 10.7.5

2.4 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Get hold of a fast external FireWire HD pronto! Haul the whole project over and continue work.

Are you at 32 or 64 with Logic?

Good luck!

Im on 32

I bought a 1T thunderbolt a few weeks ago which i put all my Spectrasonic synths on. This freed up loads of HD space on my macbook. I thought by doing this I wouldnt have any more issues. Everything was fine until i got into the final stages of the arrangement. Thats when it started playing up. So when i take the whole project file and put it on my external drive, do i have to do anything for the my mac to find it or will it automatically locate it ?

Thanks for your help.

Are you still having instruments tracks active? Because then it could well be a memory issue.

Also, you have to move the entire project folder, with everything belonging to it, not only the project file! Use the export function of Logic. You maybe have to point Logic to the new Location once, but then it should not have any difficulties to find stuff belonging to the project.

When exporting you'll have the opportunity to rename the project. Make an external Backup of the original project and then delete it from the internal drive. Throw it in the trash, don't empty it until you're positive everything works in the new project.

If this doesn't work we'll have to try some other options.

Have a nice day!

Sorry, but this is incorrect. The File:Export functions in Logic will NOT give you a working project folder in a new location.

Either:

Use the File:Save As to save the entire project to the external HD

Use File:Save a Copy As

In the Finder, simply copy the current project folder to the external drive, then load that project by manually navigating to the project file via File:Open, or double click the 'new' project file in the Finder to open it.

The original project folder can stay where it is until you have established that all is well with the copy

Doesn't the project contain pointers to the original audio files, if they're in the same location in the folder with the same name the project will load the original files on the system disk? I haven't done this in a while but that's the way Logic project files use to work.

Recent versions of OSX write like mad to the system disk, also journaling adds a bit of overhead (with no benefit) regarding large audio files.

I just checked this on OSX.7.5 and LP9.1.8:

Project started on Desktop (for speed), audio files recorded, project saved.

In Finder, project folder copied to 2nd drive, project re-loaded in to Logic from the second drive.

The Bin reports that the files were loaded from the (correct) 2nd drive project folder.

Unfortunately it hasn't worked. It is exactly the same as before.

I copied the complete project file over to the external HD and deleted the file from my Mac HD.

Everything work fine but still has the same problem of the HD monitor hitting the max and then fading back down to zero.

My external drive is a 1T thunderbolt with 900GB free space available so it cant possibly be struggling for space?

Im puzzled : (

Just out of curiosity, what happens when you use a small process buffer.

If it's no help go back to your original settings.

That's a hard drive "Use" meter, it's not unusual what you're seeing. When you start Logic it grab's the audio off the drive filling the buffers, this causes a spike in the drive use meter.

What's not normal is your comment: " It either just doesnt work or it leaves me with and audio block full of white noise." This should not happen.
