Nothing is stopping you from getting your music elsewhere and, using iTunes and your computer, transferring it to your iPad.

I don't even know if my music is on iTunes. In my case, I rip my CD's, then import the music into iTunes adn sync it to my iPad and iPod. I do the same with my video files. I use other programs to make them, import them into iTunes and then sync them.

Using iTunes is the easiest way, but not the only way to get content on your device.. You just have to take the time to make and import the files.
