Q: How Do I import, export or upload AVCHD when there's no 'folder' or files for individual clips

Holy Cow - I thought I knew Macs.

anyway -

I have a Sony RX-100. After several tries to import the video files - which in 10.6.8 where MTS that had to be converted to h.264 - I chose to import the

'AVCHD' file into a folder on my desktop. It appears as a single Quicktime file in the Mountain Lion (10.8.2) finder window but when I click on it - QuickTime Player opens up a window that has clips in it.

My question is - primarily - How do I access these clips/files outside of Quicktime in order to upload them (to Vimeo in particular), export them as single files or do anything with them other than view them from this window.

My second, less pressing, question is - what the heck is this? Why would a file as common as this be treated in such an odd and seemingly useless way? anyway, I could go on.

Any help is appreciated - I've become rather accustomed to having video files I can select for upload to vimeo. I'd like to continue.
