It depends on what charger you are using. If you are using an iPhone charger, it supplies less voltage than an iPad charger and makes the charging really slow. Use the designated iPad one. Hope it helps

After checking my adaptor, USB cable and blowing debris out of iPad connector port, I still got the same message about the unit not charging. After a couple hours of research (and no useful suggestions from the Apple reps) I came across this solution: Go to settings on your iPad and turn the Airplane mode ON. Then turn the iPad OFF by pressing & holding the power button. Leave unit off for about 20 seconds. Turn the iPad back on and it should now show "charging." Turn airplane mode OFF and proceed as normal.
