I recently bought an iPhone 5 and restored it from my iPhone 4 back up. It worked fine but I was having issues making calls. I took it back and was given a new phone. When I brought it home & tried to restore from back up I received the following error "can not restore from back up not compatible or corrupt file."

Sounds like the backup is corrupt. Restore it to another backup if you have one, such as the one from your iPhone 4.
