Today, my iPhone 5's home button decided not to work. I had to use the Assisttouch feature to do everything. Is that normal? I tried the hard reset, and same results. I will hate to replace my iphone :| since everything else works fine except the home button. Is it a software bug or hardware defect?

Very strange. I'll guess I'll use the on-screen home peramently lol cuz I can't return it I am stuck with it. It was working fine for a while until tonight. lol.
