Switched from PC to Mac mini with OS X v10.8.2. HP Laserjet 3200 won't print. It prints: "%!PS-Adobe-3.0 %APL_DSC_Encoding: UTF8  %APLProducer: (Version 10.8.2. (Build 12C310" on a page and then keeps feeding blank pages through.  I have downloaded latest drivers from HP and from Mac.  Also, reset printer in System Preferences.  Nothing has helped.  Any thoughts?

Thanks Linc.  I have already followed the instructions on this link and it has not helped.  As I mentioned in my first posting, I downloaded the latest drivers and have reset my printer several times now.  Sill only prints the %!IPS-ADOBE error message across the top of the page.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Select "/var/log/cups/error_log" from the file list in the Console window. Then select the messages from the time of the last printing attempt. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.

If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Is this what you are looking for:

    Back up all data.

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:

    sudo chmod g-w /L*/Pri*/hp/f*/hpPo*/*/M*/hpP*

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste (command-V) into the Terminal window. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.

    Test.

Ok, followed your instructions. After putting in my password and pressing enter, it returned the prompt. Printer is still not responding.

After seeing this, I changed the admin to Read & Write, then reset the printer in System Preferences, disconnected the printer USB cable, restarted the iMac mini, reattached the printer USB cable and printed a test page.  Still not working.

  • Linc Davis Level 10 Level 10 (158,565 points)

The permissions were right before you changed them, and are now wrong. If you prefer to solve this problem your own way, that's fine; in that case I'll leave you to it. Otherwise, I notice that your log extract is from six days ago. Please post a current one (after repairing the damage you did above.)

  • MRZ29 Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

The log extract was copied exactly as it showed in the computer and pasted into my message.  Here is a screen shot of the error log that I just took:

Also, here is a screen shot of the Sharing & Permissions:

The log still shows that the file has wrong permissions. If that isn't true -- and if you're showing the right Info dialog, it isn't -- then it's an internal error in the printing software. One of the steps you say you've taken is to reinstall the software. If you've also taken all the other steps in the article, I don't have anything else to suggest. It's a problem only HP or Apple can solve.

What should the permissions be?  When I changed the admin to read&write, you chastised me for "damaging" the settings.  So now it is back to read only.
