I don't belive there is any way to save or export your iPhone text messages without accessing the iTunes backups on your computer. Best bet is trying a third party program to see if you have any luck.
I've used the decipher text message software in the past at my law firm and it's been helpful for saving texts. There are also other programs out there that are similar I think.

Mary is absolutely right about third party software. There are not loads but certainly enough for you to do the job. I prefer Phoneview with Ecamm because I used it with iPhone since the first iPhone came out on the market. iTunes should be used only as a first level interface management software for your phone. It is not really the tool to be used for anything else. Hopefully you now have your problem licked so let us know what you ended up doing about it so that other users get the benefit.

Sorry Pal but I don't spam and I don't even write in forum. People like you are the reason why. I guess it is easy for you to blah blah instead of contributing anything worthwhile. Who made you the forum commader? Because you have 7 points? Get off my back. My SMS are very important to me and I can understand that someone finds them important as well and is looking for a solution. I shared the solution I have been using since the first iPhone have been on the market. I stand by what I said and if you had anything between the ears you would go and look for yourself before flapping your gums.
Post deleted, I saw that. I am not a poster so maybe the link I enclosed was not allowed. I would not know, I don't post normally and this will be my last post for sure. I can't deal with idiotic people hiding behing key boards. I have a life.
