Q: Mac Apps won't update

When I open an application and it notifies me that an update is available, I open the Mac App store and ask for updates. And every time I get a message that says "No updates available." Apple recognizes my ID and password (obviously, since I'm posting here). What's the problem? How do I fix it? (Yes, I can download updates individually, but the automatic update is supposed to work, so I'd like it to, you know, work.

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2010), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)
