It says it's open at the top and I can see all the usual fcp stuff there, such as 'view, mark, modify' etc. However the rest of it cannot be seen at all. All I can see is my desktop and therefore cannot edit anything. This is extremely important as I'm required to do a showreel for next week. So if anyone could please help it would be greatly appreciated.

Is the FCP icon on the Dock? Click on it. The FCP window may have been minimized. You could also try quitting the application and relaunching.
Yes it is on the dock but it definately isn't minimized as far as I can see. I've tried quitting it and relaunching it, and also restarting the mac, but the probelm is still there and I just don;t understand it! Thanks for your imput.
Two more things to try. Trash your preferences using Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion. Trash your window layouts Home/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro/Layouts.

Do I just click on preference manager and then click/ tick final cut pro x and trash it? Will this get rid of final cut pro all together?
No. That trashes the preference files and resets the application to its default state.
I tried the preferences but it still hasn't done anything...where do I go to do the other plan you mentioned?
In your home folder. To access the Library, in the Finder hold the Option key and use the Go menu. Follow the file path in the message above. You may need to reinstall the application but try thus first.
When the application is open do you see the application in the Dock with the little button below it indicates it's open?
Do I trash the 'Final Cut Pro.saved.moduleLayout' or the 'Default.moduleLayout'? However the second one is in a further down folder called modified.
Trash the whole Layout folder and reboot.
Tried it and it didn't work unfortunately. I really dunno what's wrong with it, as it's been working fine until now and it's not like it's crashed/ crashing.
I'd propose you simply:
1) quit fcpx or force it out
2) remove | delete the file used in lion and M/lion to reinstate the app when it's fired up from last item. This file is at
~/library/Saved Application State/com.apple.FinalCut.savedState
Use finder opt+Go menu and drag to trash or use the bash terminal and the unix
"rm -f ~/library/Saved Application State/com.apple.FinalCut.savedState" to delete it.
3) now fire up FCPX. It should restore the FCPX UI in its pristine state using the current settings.
